The tentacle dragged Soraya toward the blubbery mass. Part of me was tempted to let it eat her like a noontime snack.

I ran over, brightblade in hand, and lopped off the tentacle. More tentacles speared out. I ghostwalked to the side, slashed several of them, rolled again, and cut off two more. Each severed appendage crawled back toward the blob, reabsorbing into the mass. The tentacles themselves were endless in number since they sprouted right from the body of the creature.

The blob gurgled, flesh jiggling with anger or frustration at the elusive prey. I'd never encountered anything like this thing, but if it was making noises, that almost certainly meant it had a mouth or other orifice that sucked in air and blew it out. It meant that it wasn't composed solely of fat and that there was possibly a weak point.

The problem was even the grenade launcher wasn't blowing off enough fat to make a difference. Another pair of tentacles lashed out at me. I popped the caps off two frostnades and threw them at the grasping appendages. They caught the frostnades and reflexively yanked them back into the main body of the blob, right through the fatty surface.

A pair of muted explosions shook the jiggling mass. The outer layer of fat iced over as the frostnades froze the blob from within. I turned to Soraya. "Fire a grenade!"

She aimed and squeezed the trigger. A single round struck the blob and exploded. Frozen chunks of fat shattered, taking a huge bite out of the creature. At the very center of the mass was a wrinkled sac covered in eyes. An orifice lined with teeth slurped moistly.

"Fire again!" I shouted.

"I'm out!" Soraya scrambled for one of the weapons cases, but the creature was already thawing, the thick fat flowing to cover the body at its center. The bits and pieces that had been frozen were already melting and flowing back toward the main body. I ran toward the blob, hoping to drive my brightblade down its throat before it could heal, but it was healing too quickly.

An arrow whistled past my head and thunked right into the center of the tooth-lined orifice. The creature at the center gurgled. A tentacle gripped the arrow and pulled it out. I continued running at it, slashing tentacles that tried to stop me, but the flesh congealed around the creature before I could get close.

"Fuck!" I grabbed a couple of more frostnades and tossed them. This time the tentacles batted them away. The monster might be a ball sack at the center of a mound of fat, but it wasn't stupid. It rolled toward me far faster than I could run. I prepared to ghostwalk out of the way.

The creature slowed. Chunks of fat flopped off of it like a tire losing its tread on the highway. The blubber began turning a sickly green. Within seconds, only the creature at the center was left, a round wrinkled sac with mouths and eyes on every side.
